Internet has got all. And more importantly for free! All you need to know is Where! You will find everything.

A decade ago, Internet was nothing more than a pain for us. Surfing was painstakingly slow and there was very little compelling information to be found. But now, Internet has evolved and now a powerful force in our life. Now it has a different image “A Pool of Freebies”.

Yes, all you need is some time and patience. There’s lot to offer and that’s too for no cost. We are slowly moving to towards an era where all our daily needs will go through Internet, like watching TV, purchasing Household items, etc. In fact, many have already started using Internet for watching movies.

Think about MS Office which is very costly to buy, but Sun Microsystems’ OpenOffice.Org comes with no cost and has still got word processing, a spreadsheet application, a presentation tool. Many tech companies are now offering samples of their applications like Grisoft who sells one of the most popular antivirus products, AVG Antivirus, which also has a free version which is just as effective as the paid one.

It’s Open Source Era
Open Source software is our future; Open Source Software is waiting to conquer the market and has the potential to do so. Netcraft reported that although Apache is one of the more recent web servers, it has more market share than other web servers, put together do. Linux is also increasing in numbers; it is estimated as the fastest growing operating system. While exact numbers are indeed difficult to ascertain, most researchers estimate around 8 to 10 million Linux installations. Among the millions of installations, the number of exact users may even exceed this figure, as Linux is a multi-user system. This number is growing at around 40% per year. With such rising figures, we should admit that Open Source Software does have its advantages over closed software.

    Hi there,

I have dial-up so surfing is still ‘painstakingly slow’ for me. I will get broadband one day soon.

Freebies are good - I think it’s a great resource. But with everything comes a price. Take Blogger or Flickr or even MySpace for instance - who truly owns all the content? You also tend to have less control over coding and design.

Like I said, freebies are cool. It empowers a lot of people, but in some ways, it also disempowers them.

    take care…
